I love to sing and praise Jesus with music, and over the last month, some hard challenges and bumps have crept into my family’s life. Last Sunday was an unusual one for me because when I got to church and the worship began I was unable to sing. I was feeling vulnerable and disappointed with the "stuff" causing me worry. I was overcome with emotion and I knew that if I opened my mouth, a river of tears would begin.
At first I had a sense of panic that I was not singing, after all, singing is worship, right? But after a few moments, a sense of peace took over. The Holy Spirit invaded my being and I praised Jesus with a sense of awe and humility. I praised him with a quiet voice and heart. His power and strength surrounded me and I quickly remembered that worship is not about how we worship, but about Who we worship!
At that moment I began to worship an awesome God in the quiet of His presence with hundreds of people around me singing and lifting hands of joy. When the music ended I sat down and prayed thanks to my Jesus for meeting me exactly where I was. I thanked Him for reminding me of His promises and I shouted out prayers of adoration and love for my Savior, my Lighthouse, and my Lord.
John 4:23 says "But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people." (ESV)
Jesus makes it very clear that worship is about far more than music. In fact, in the context of this passage, he’s not talking about music at all when he defines true worship. He’s talking about a lifestyle. He’s talking about offering our lives to God and being eager to pursue truth and knowledge of the God we worship.
As I got caught up last Sunday in how I worship, rather than Who I worship, I began to understand that without God, worship is pointless. Without God, the words that we sing have no meaning. But once we surrender and humbly approach God we are worshipping! God meets you and I right where we are. God wants us to worship Him as a natural response to his Supreme greatness, because he is the only One worthy of all praise. That is true worship.
So today, I am back at worship, praising our awesome God. My circumstances in life still include some overwhelming bumps, but God gently reminds me that when hard things come my way, I must press in and trust Him. I am so thankful that our God is faithful and promises to never leave us or forsake us.
We all have highs and lows in life. Our stories just have different details. My prayer for you today is that you are not going through one moment without God. Remember, God loves you, God walks alongside of you, and God meets you right where you are. Don't miss the opportunity to worship Him every day, honestly and humbly. He is waiting! Have a great week with your Savior!
