What A Friend We Have In Jesus

What A Friend We Have In Jesus

by Joy Martin, Co-founder Set Me Free Ministries

Today I am grateful for the start of a new week. Because … well, because last week was really hard on me. It was a bit of a Murphy’s Law week—if something could go wrong, it did. But this week … well, this week is going to be great.

No, I didn’t win the lottery. No, a personal maid and/or chef didn’t show up on my doorstep. No, all of my problems didn’t miraculously fix themselves as I slept. But you know what? Something even better happened! In the midst of my heavy heart, I was reminded that despite whatever junk I’m going through and whatever worries are burdening me, I have an amazing friend in Jesus Christ. And that is why this week is looking up.

As I was getting ready for church Sunday morning, I found myself filled with anxiety. Several things were weighing heavily on me, and the more I thought about all of the little problems I was juggling, the more impossible they seemed to overcome. I called my mom during my drive to church, and she prayed over me for peace. But the anxiety held on.

And then at one point during praise and worship, the music picked up and a soloist began to sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” When I was little, my mom had a little music box that played this song, so I knew it well. I’ve always liked it, but I don’t know that the words had ever hit me before like they hit me Sunday morning. After hearing those sweet words fill the room, I felt the anxiety drop away.

Truth is, we all have an amazing friend who is willing and able to take on all of our burdens. And I couldn’t say it any better myself, so I’m not going to try. Below you will find the lyrics to this hymn. Read them, pray them, believe them. Because it’s as true for you as it is for me: What a Friend We Have in Jesus!

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
There will be no need for prayer—
Rapture, praise, and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there.
