Torment or Peace?

Beverly A Brown, Set Me Free Ministries' Prayer Coordinator

I found out recently that I have a "leaky valve." That is a simple way of saying that one of my heart valves isn't working properly and can't keep my blood flowing like it should. I know that this isn't an uncommon occurrence among people my age. After all, my heart has been faithful to beat for over 65 years now and has caused me very little trouble. I'm grateful for that.

I am scheduled to have my faulty valve repaired in a few weeks, and because I believe in the power of prayer, I asked some of my friends to pray for my family and me. At the end of the request, I made a simple statement: "I am at peace with all of this."

And I truly am! I have absolutely no apprehension knowing that not only am I in the hands of competent doctors, but even more so, I am in the hands of an Almighty and Sovereign God. My heart problem came as no surprise to Him. He is my creator and He knows everything about me. In Matthew 10:30 God tells me He has even numbered the hairs on my head! Wow!!

After sending out my prayer request, I heard back from one of my friends. She said my simple statement struck her because she has a friend who recently went through the same procedure I am going to have, but with a stark contrast. This woman is an unbeliever.

She was so frightened to go through the surgery, she actually canceled right before the surgery day despite the fact that her doctor warned her of the grave risk of doing that. She did finally agree to have the much needed repair, but it was "pretty much a nightmare" to use my friend's description.

I am a realist. I know that I will have pain and will have to give my body plenty of time to heal before I feel 100% again. I also know that there is always a risk involved with any surgery. But I am not fearful. Not even of death. Jesus overcame even that.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 in the RSV puts it this way, "O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

And again, in I John 4:18 in the NKJV we are given these words of assurance, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."

Not only did Jesus cancel the power of sin and death, He also gives us the assurance of His perfect peace. What a glorious God we have. And when we are secure in His love, we have nothing to fear.
