It doesn't seem to matter what it is. If you want something you have to sacrifice something. Even something simple: If you want short hair, you have to sacrifice wearing your hair in a ponytail. If you want a family, you have to sacrifice your time, money, and sometimes sanity.
But, if you want freedom, true freedom, someone has to sacrifice his or her life. Today is Memorial Day and we remember all of the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, their lives for our freedom. Today we also honor those who have made other sacrifices. Some have sacrificed years in service away from loved ones and familiarity. Some have sacrificed their bodies through injuries. We must remember these valiant heroes.
There is one more hero we must not only remember, but we should worship. One who gave His very life for us. One who was beaten, bruised, bloodied, and humiliated so that we could live. One who is God and became man for us. One who loves us more than we can imagine. The Father, through Jesus, gave us a gift of salvation. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Rom 6:23)
God gave us a gift that we can freely choose or freely reject, a gift of grace that we can't earn. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." (Eph 2:8-9) God gave us a gift of the ultimate sacrifice.
So, today while we remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, you can make a sacrifice as well. Sacrifice your life to the One who sacrificed His. Turn your life over to the Creator of the Universe who loves you more than you can comprehend.
