My Silver-Haired Crown
by Beverly Brown, Set Me Free Ministries Prayer Coordinator
My husband and I just got home from a wonderful evening. We went to see two of our granddaughters perform in their piano recital. There is something very special about being a grandma. Yes, I still love my children as much as ever, and I always will. But those grandkids are just … well, special. I think part of it is that we just get to enjoy them, because the hard work belongs to Mom and Dad. In fact, my husband has always said that the best thing about this time of life is being able to say, "Give Grandma and Grandpa a kiss good-bye."
God designed it to be that way. In fact, it says in Proverbs, "The silver-haired head is a crown of glory…. Children's children are the crown of old men [and women]." So, if you are a grandparent, enjoy these years. They are your reward for all of the long days and sleepless nights while you were raising your own children. And if you are still in those long days and sleepless nights, know that a reward awaits you. Just hang in there! Believe me, it will be over all too soon, and you will be the ones saying, "Give Grandma and Grandpa a kiss good-bye."
One more thought before closing this blog. If you don't have grandchildren of your own, please consider finding young people who might not have a grandma or grandpa and invest in their lives in some way. Those of us who have lived long enough to receive that silver-haired crown have an important task. We read in Psalm 71:17-18 exactly what job God has given us: "O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come."
Remember: retirement is not found in the Bible.
