This time of year I am counting down the days to the waving of the palms on Palm Sunday, the meaningful moments of Holy Week, and finally Easter morning! I love the excitement that comes from celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. I learned one of my favorite “definitions” of Easter when I was a freshman in high school: EASTER = Resurrection of Jesus = An undeserving free gift for you!
There is something so humbling about Easter; it’s not hard at all for most of us to fall on our knees in awe of God and His goodness on Easter morning. After all, Easter morning changed everything, didn’t it? That question reminds me of one of my favorite phrases: Knowing God Changes Everything.
I have that phrase plastered in places I see frequently because I need a reminder that knowing God changes everything when I’m having a rough day. If I were to be honest, there are a lot of days that I am not in awe of the Savior. There are a lot of days that I let the world, and all the stuff that comes with it, creep in and throw me out of awe and into ugh. I tend to forget that Jesus is with me at all times.
I dare to say that it is pretty easy to forget when our busy weeks kick into gear. It’s easy for us to slip into lives that barely save a corner for Jesus.
This year I want to challenge you to not let Easter be a holiday that comes and goes, but to commit to being Resurrection people who live and celebrate the promise and awe of Easter (JESUS) all year long. We have done nothing to deserve the gift of salvation, the grace of our Lord and the forgiveness of sin. But we can, and must, respond to that gift and not let it fade away until the next year when Easter rolls around.
So I wonder, how are we responding?
Are we just going through the motions?
Do our lives reflect an intimate daily walk with the Lord?
I recently said to our middle school kids: If God were to come right now and give you a report card on your day in and day out walk with Jesus, what would your grade be? That question can stop you and me in our tracks.
I wonder if this week we have acknowledged how much we truly need God. Are we spending time in His Word (God’s love letter to us) daily? Do we really believe that KNOWING GOD CHANGES EVERYTHING? Do we rely on Him for guidance and strength? Have we come today in awe of the risen Savior; in awe of Jesus?
Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 gives us clear instruction on how we should approach and spend time with Jesus. Let’s take a look Ecclesiastes 5:1-7:
“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools who do not know that they do wrong. Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty with your heart, to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth so let your words be few. As a dream comes when there are many cares…so does the speech of a fool when there are many words. When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore, stand in awe of God.”
I invite you to approach God today, and everyday, as Ecclesiastes teaches us. Embrace and celebrate the undeserving free gift of Jesus every day of the next 365 days. We are Resurrection people all year long, not just during the Easter season. Knowing God changes everything! Has it changed you?
If you are reading this blog and want to know more about accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior, we would love to talk with you and help you get started on a journey that will truly change your life forever! KNOWING GOD CHANGES EVERYTHING.
