Recently I was asked by a little preschooler I care for daily the following question: “Kristin, why is your name Kristin?” I quickly told him that my name was Kristin because that was the name my mom and dad gave me when I was born. I then moved on with getting breakfast for him.
Following our conversation, I took note of how many times he said my name over the next hour. Are you ready for this? In just one hour, I counted 28 times that my name was used to start a sentence! Yep, Donovan called on me for advice, asked questions, asked permission, and sometimes just shared information with me. But no matter what, most of the time “Kristin” was at the start of his sentence.
You see, I am his go-to person for most everything while he is here! Do you have a go-to person or persons in your life? People who keep you on track, listen and care when you are in need, and provide you with accountability and godly advice or wisdom? This is such an important piece of God’s plan for your life! But there is also someone else God gave to you and me as a “go-to” person!
In Isaiah 9:6 it says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This scripture foretells the coming of our Savior—Jesus!
I love these names of Jesus! It is such an encouragement and reminder to me. When I think of Jesus in these terms, it seems so much easier to run to Him, to call out to Him, to look to Him as my daily “go-to.” Let’s take a look at each one:
Wonderful Counselor. He understands every experience we face no matter what and has done it without sin. He can help you through anything. As my Pastor says, Jesus is our GPS!
Mighty God. I love this one because it reminds be to tuck in behind the Mighty God. Often, I tell Donovan to grab on to my back pocket and hold on on tight when we are in a parking lot. You see, when he is tucked in behind me, he stays safe and is protected by me. God wants that for us too, to tuck in behind Him and to allow Him to provide protection and to be a harbor of safety. Our God is mighty!
Everlasting Father. He takes it all forever and always, and we are His heir. His love for us is an enduring love forever.
Prince of Peace. His first mandate is to make us right. Jesus is a gift to us. He is the answer to our problems and gives us life anew!
Jesus is the name above all names! So the best advice I can give you today is when you are working on your go-to list, be certain that Jesus is number ONE on the list. Just think how wonderful it would be if you and I called on Jesus as many times as Donovan calls on me every day. That’s my challenge for you this week!
Attach yourself to the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Call on the name of Jesus, name above all names, first and often every day.
