It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

by Stephanie Olson, Set Me Free Ministries Co-founder

It's the most wonderful time of the year

With the kids jingle belling

And everyone telling you

"Be of good cheer"

It's the most wonderful time of the year

That Christmas song has been playing in my mind over and over again this season, but perhaps not for the right reason. Alas, it's more for the irony. Allow me to change the words slightly:

It's the busiest time of the year

With musical programs

And sick noses blowing

I'm shedding a tear

It's the busiest time of the year

Isn't that sad? I understand that part of my busyness stems from the fact that I'm a busy mom with three young kids. One of my children dances in The Nutcracker every year, and of course, there are the Christmas programs at school and church. The wonderful, endless parties of those who want to get together over the season to celebrate. The shopping, the baking, and the merry-making. The time from Thanksgiving to Christmas is extremely busy!

And so, I challenge myself, and you if you'll join me, this year to SLOW DOWN! Once the kids are out of school and we are on our official Christmas break I am going to take the time to truly celebrate what this season is all about. The birth of our Savior.

Charlie Brown, the Charles Schultz character, was having similar difficulties. It wasn't until Linus Van Pelt stepped in and shared what the true meaning of Christmas was all about, that Charlie Brown found peace.

Linus found Luke 2:8-14:

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this [shall be] a sight unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

Thank you, Linus (and Charles Schultz), for reminding us all what Christmas is about! And there's more! That Savior grew up to do this:

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,

Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives

And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

~Luke 4:16-20

Praise God! We have a Savior who loves us and came to heal the brokenhearted and set the captives free! That is a reason to truly have a very Merry Christmas! Enjoy this time of year. I will too!
