Is He Worth the Sacrifice?

by Stephanie Olson, Set Me Free Ministries Co-founder

"Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was." (James 1:21-24)

Well, tough words. I guess no one ever accused God of mincing His words. But what does it look like to be a doer of the Word? How far do we have to go to follow Jesus? How much do we have to sacrifice in our lives?

We have been told so often in America that following Jesus is nothing but financial prosperity, health, happiness, and a bed of roses. But is it really? Is that what Jesus told us it would be like? I’m afraid not. Jesus Himself told us that we would have trials, but He also said we could be of good cheer because He had overcome the world (John 16:33). He gives us a peace that passes all understanding!

But how do we get Jesus’ peace? We get that peace by following Jesus–by being sold-out, committed, and totally surrendered to Jesus, by being led by the Holy Spirit and not by our flesh. That’s not easy! How do we truly carry the cross to live a life for Christ?

Well, let’s start here. How much are you willing to sacrifice to follow Jesus?

Would you be willing to give up your favorite book series if you found out God was opposed to it?

Would you give up a relationship you love being in if you found out God was opposed to it?

Would you give up your way of eating if you found out God was opposed to it?

Would you give up your favorite movies if you found out God was opposed to them?

Would you give up your favorite form of exercise if you found out God was opposed to it?

Would you give up your lifestyle if you found out God was opposed to it?

Would you give up your favorite form of relaxation if you found out God was opposed to it?

Would you give up something that you think brings you closer to God if you found out God Himself was opposed to it?

Would you give up your favorite preacher if you found out God was opposed to him or her?

Would you give up your favorite music if you found out God was opposed to it?

Or

Would you give up your favorite possessions if God asked you to?

Would you give up your job if God asked you to?

Would you give up a big portion of your money if God asked you to?

Would you give up your friends if God asked you to?

Would you give up your sleep if God asked you to?

Would you give up your desire to be acknowledged if God asked you to?

Would you give up something you love to do if God asked you to?

Would you give up your time if God asked you to?

In Exodus Moses was offered a land full of milk and honey with the protection of an Angel of the Lord, but not His presence. Moses said in no uncertain terms, “ “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)

It is so easy to say, “Yes, Lord! I will follow you.” But the truth is, when we allow God to truly invade our lives, it can be mighty uncomfortable. If this makes you squirm a bit, you are not alone. But the good news is that when we are obedient in not just word but deed, God replaces all of those things with something so much more! Himself! I’ll take that any day! Lord, I will not go without your presence, and I will follow You!
