I have been enjoying an online Bible study on the book of Hosea through the website SheReadsTruth. Hosea is a book that challenges your faith walk and reveals truths about human nature that hits you square in the face. One of my favorite parts so far, however, is the study’s focus on the unwavering love and care that God has for each of us! With the crazy world we live in and the whirlwind lives we lead, I am so thankful for the truth that God never changes!
I work with middle school girls at my church. The best phrase I can use to describe them is to say “they are a hot mess.” And I mean that in loving way! Don’t get me wrong. They are wonderful girls and I love them a lot, but their lives are such a roller coaster of emotional drama and they are so early in their walks with Jesus. The one constant thing that I can always tell them week to week is that God never changes.
We never know what life will throw at us day-to-day, but we always know what God has for us! That’s a good reminder for you and me too. Whether we are having a mountaintop moment or have been in a valley for days or weeks, our God is faithful. His love is constant. When we can’t seem to get it right, our God is a God of second chances.
The Hosea study I told you about says it best, I think. “God’s character never changes. His one face is righteousness. His one word is holiness. And His one undying, unrelenting call for His people is love.” You and I are God’s one true love. Wherever you are, no matter what you have done, no matter what anyone else thinks of you, no matter what mountain you are on or what valley you have fallen into, God loves you. That has never and will never change!
Hebrews 13:8 tells us: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
So, back to my favorite phrase of the day: “hot mess.” When you are a hot mess, what is the first thing you do? Do you turn to Jesus? Are you looking to Him when you are happy, angry, lonely, thankful, unsure, or worried? Do you rely on Jesus and seek His counsel all day, every day? No matter what your circumstance, in every moment of your day, God loves you and is waiting for you to jump into His loving arms. He wants a relationship with you!
I can tell you from experience that it a daily challenge to surrender and trust God. There will be days when we turn our backs on God, days we just ignore Him, and days when we wonder if He is really there. I call those my fall-off-the-bike days. Ladies, when those days pop up, get up and get back on! It takes a lot of practice and dedication to ride a bike. And so it is with our walk with God. We fall and must get up over and over again. But don’t forget that through it all, God never changes.
