He Defies Common Sense

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

by Stephanie Olson, Co-founder Set Me Free Ministries

I was talking to a woman during a Bible study one day about trust. I told her a story of a woman who had to trust God with the seemingly impossible. At the time, it was a story that I didn’t yet know the outcome of; however, today, knowing the outcome, it shouldn’t surprise us that God came through in a mighty way. But that day, as I explained the story, the woman in the Bible study exclaimed that God would never do anything that defied common sense. Really?

Every story in the Bible in which someone had to trust God defied common sense. Abraham and Sarah were 100 years old when God told them they would have a child. Moses was told to cross the Red Sea when it was full of water. The Israelites were in the desert for 40 years, and God told them that they wouldn’t lack shoes, food, or anything else. Joseph was told he would be leader over his entire family and was then sold as a slave and thrown in prison. Joshua was told to march around Jericho, and then the Israelites would be able to take the city. And, of course, Jesus told us He would rise from the dead after three days of being in a tomb. All of these things sound absolutely impossible.

And now I am in a place where God is telling me, Trust Me. I find myself in a situation in which any sound person would tell me it won’t work, tell me it’s not smart, tell me there is no way you can do this. And they would be right. In the natural, what I am believing for won’t work, it’s not smart, and there is no way it can happen. But God!

So, if you are believing God for the impossible and you need Him to defy common sense, remember with me who our God is!

            Psalm 136

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
    For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!
    For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
    For His mercy endures forever:

To Him who alone does great wonders,
    For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
    For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who laid out the earth above the waters,
    For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who made great lights,
    For His mercy endures forever—
The sun to rule by day,
    For His mercy endures forever;
The moon and stars to rule by night,
    For His mercy endures forever.

To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn,
    For His mercy endures forever;
And brought out Israel from among them,
    For His mercy endures forever;
With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm,
    For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,
    For His mercy endures forever;
And made Israel pass through the midst of it,

    For His mercy endures forever;
But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
    For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
    For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who struck down great kings,
    For His mercy endures forever;
And slew famous kings,
    For His mercy endures forever—
Sihon king of the Amorites,
    For His mercy endures forever;
And Og king of Bashan,
    For His mercy endures forever—
And gave their land as a heritage,
    For His mercy endures forever;
A heritage to Israel His servant,
    For His mercy endures forever.

Who remembered us in our lowly state,
    For His mercy endures forever;
And rescued us from our enemies,
    For His mercy endures forever;
Who gives food to all flesh,
    For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
    For His mercy endures forever.
