Awful or Awe Full

Awful or Awe Full

by Kristin Fuhs, Set Me Free Ministries Board of Directors

Is your life awful or awe full? Be honest! Do you have days that are awful? Days when you feel like you are walking on a journey all alone? Days when you have no idea what to do next? Days when you are overwhelmed with anger, frustration, laziness, disappointment, fear, guilt, or some other emotion? Those days creep into our lives, don’t they? God doesn’t promise that life will always be easy or days will always be filled with joy. But He does promise to always walk with us in every day. He promises to never leave us or forsake us. God loves you so much that He sacrificed His own Son Jesus on the cross. Have you thought about the fact that Jesus swapped His perfect life for our rotten lives and paid for our sins? God loves you more than anyone or anything! God wants to be in your life every day—the good and the bad days, the joy-filled and the sorrow-filled days, the lazy and the hectic days—every day!

Several months ago, I accepted a challenge in a worship service to go “belly up” for Jesus every day. Going belly up for Jesus requires a willingness to surrender daily to Jesus. Belly-up believers stand in awe of God every day. Not just some days and not just when you are in the mood, but every day, standing in awe, surrendering your life, your actions, your thoughts, your everything to Jesus. Complete surrender! I must be honest with you. This task of surrendering is not an easy one. There will be days when you fail! But the good news is that our God is a God of second chances.

We must not lose the awe of God. We must resist having our Loving Father become an ordinary part of our lives. God is one of kind. His love is an extraordinary love, and His grace is nothing short of amazing! For me, the first step in going belly up is standing awe of God every day at the start of the day. Quiet reflection with God can happen before you get out of bed, while you are making breakfast, or during your drive to work. The possibilities of where to spend a moment in awe with God are endless. But no matter what, take a minute every day to start by saying good morning to God and breathe in His goodness! Our God is an awesome God. Sit in His presence, awed and renewed. How you do it is up to you. The key is to do it! (For me, the shower is a great place for quiet time with the Savior. Try it!)

After my morning awe moment, there are three “awe areas” that keep me full in my daily journey to be a belly-up Jesus follower! Take a look:

Stand in awe of what He has done for you. Romans 8:28 says: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” God created you, loves you, and has a plan for you that is good. Trust Him and surrender to Him every day, remembering what He has done for you!

Stand in awe of what He is doing for you. Romans 8:31 says: “If God is for us then who can be against us?” God is bigger than any awful thing going on in your life today. He is for you and with you and is offering you all the strength and power you need to go belly up for Him every day!

Stand in awe of what He will do for you. Romans 8:38–39 says:  “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels or rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor death nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us form the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord!” Read that verse out loud. It is a promise from God that guarantees you that nothing here on earth—those awful moments, people, or circumstances—can separate you from God and His promise of eternal life for you as belly-up follower of Jesus!

So I invite each of you to go “belly up” for Jesus with me! Stand in awe of the Lord’s goodness, love, and grace. Surrender every day to Him completely. Ask God to lead and direct your every day moment by moment. Awe full lives are in our reach every day. Choose to be full of awe for our great God today! Awe full is a beautiful place to be. I hope you will join me!
